Υπόθεση:
Two brothers come to terms with the surreality of rural adolescence. Life, death, love, and violence through the hallucinatory lens of youth.
»Hide Your Smiling Faces« is a fiction feature that explores the fleeting and ephemeral experiences of two young brothers growing up in the rural Northeast, following them as they confront friendship, responsibility, death and ado-lescence. Unfolding over a few hot summer weeks, the film acts as a portrait, exploring a transitional period in both of their individual lives as well as their relationships to those around them – most importantly to one another. Presented in a loose, vignette-based form, Hide Your Smiling Faces combines drama, mystery, and fantasy in an atmospheric exploration of what it means to grow up in rural America.
As family ties deteriorate, two young brothers search for answers and identity in the sparse, secluded terrain of the Northeast. Unfolding over a few short weeks, »Hide Your Smiling Faces« explores the many subtle influences that make us the animals we are: Love, fear, pleasure, sorrow.
As children, new and strange experiences can take on a dream-like form, bordering on fantasy. These moments live within us. As time passes they evolve and transform into memories – some authentic, some exaggerated, some wildly invented, Our lives are forever shaped by these experiences, and more importantly, our interpretations of them.
The ramblings of a troubled best friend. A rusted out car frame full of dead pets. Childish pranks at a fast-food drive-thru. The insatiable need to be accepted in the eyes of a sibling. A forest full of wildlife and an aging family dog. With distinct perspectives and vivid imaginations, the boys digest an reinterpret these moments of emotional development with equal parts fear and fascination.
Through rich interactions with one another, family and friends, strange new faces, and the very landscape they call home, Eric, 14, and Tommy, 9, strive to grow up in an increasingly confusing world. Will the brothers be consumed by the chaos around them? Or will they run headlong into their futures and the embrace the uncontrollable?
Dense forest as far as the eye can see. The boys living here roam aimlessly and practise their wrestling skills. They rarely break a smile, especially since one of them fell to his death from an old bridge. Was it an accident? Or suicide? The boy’s friend Tommy and his older brother Eric are close to the edge. Their parents are powerless. There’s upheaval in the air but nobody can put their finger on what’s wrong. There is no answer. Male pride prevents them from showing how much they are hurting. Eric in particular doesn’t know what to do with his boundless youthful energy. The brothers’ relationship is put to the test.
Daniel Patrick Carbone’s debut is a densely atmospheric rite of passage set in the remote forests of America’s northeast. His is an exemplary portrait of a group of lost boys going through puberty with all its rituals, gestures and rough-housing. Like the wilderness around them they too are left to their own devices but somehow this helps them develop their own kind of community. Carbone’s decision to forgo imposing a strict narrative structure gives the viewer room to draw his own conclusions.
